It has been a month now since the second developer preview of Android 13 was rolled out by Google. Now the company has decided to release the first beta build of Android 13 (codenamed "Tiramisu"). The latest build comes with some new color and theme options, more granular permissions for media files, Anticipatory audio routing, and better error reporting in Keystore and KeyMint.
Android 13 Beta 1 is now available to all beta users as well as developers. So, if you are an Android app developer, you can get the beta build, update your tools, and start testing your apps.
Google has added three core features to Android 13 Beta 1. Among these three new features, two are for the Android app developers, and the other is for the user which will improve the user experience on their smartphone. Apart from these, the Android 13 Beta 1 also comes with the features that the company introduced earlier in developer preview builds. This includes the new notification permission, photo picker, themed app icons, improved localization and language support, and more.
The first major highlight in Android 13 Beta 1 is the more granular permissions for media. In Android 12 or earlier, when an app wanted to access media files saved on users' local storage, it needed to ask for permission (READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE). However, upon granting the permission, it would get access to all types of media files.
With the latest update, the company adds a new set of permissions with more granular scope for accessing media files. When the permissions are granted by the user, apps will have read access to the respective media file types. These new permissions are as listed below:
There's also an improvement in the error reporting for Keystore and KeyMint that stores and generates cryptographic keys respectively. With the latest update, the apps that generate keys, Keystore, and KeyMint will now provide more detailed and accurate error indicators. The improved error reporting should now give you what you need to retry key generation.
In the Android 13 Beta 1, there is a new API that will help apps properly route audio. The new getAudioDevicesForAttributes() API allows you to retrieve a list of devices that may be used to play the specified audio and we added the getDirectProfilesForAttributes() API to help you understand whether your audio stream can be played directly
, says Google in the announcement post.
You can use these new APIs to determine the best AudioFormat to use for your audio track.
