Microsoft has announced the arrival of Microsoft Edge 114 (build: 114.0.1823.11) to the Edge Insiders in the Beta Channel, introducing two new exciting features: Edge Workspaces and the option to attach the Edge sidebar to the Windows desktop. The update also includes enhanced security mode by default, making it an even more secure browser option for users.
Edge Workspaces is a new feature that allows customers to organize their browsing tasks into dedicated windows. With Edge Workspaces, users can share a set of browser tabs, allowing working groups to view the same websites and latest working files in one place and stay on the same page.
Each Edge Workspace contains its own sets of tabs and favorites, which can be created and curated by the user and their collaborators. Edge Workspaces are automatically saved and kept up to date, providing a seamless experience for users.
Users of the Microsoft Edge sidebar will now be able to access their apps and sites directly from their Windows desktops. By clicking a "popout" icon near the base of the sidebar in the browser, users can attach the sidebar to their Windows desktop, enabling a side-by-side experience that works with any Windows app, including Microsoft Edge itself.
Users will enjoy streamlined access to the same set of powerful AI tools and web-based services, including Bing Chat, without launching a browser window, enhancing productivity regardless of where they are in Windows.
Administrators can control the availability of this feature using the StandaloneHubsSidebarEnabled policy.
Enhanced security mode provides an extra layer of protection when browsing the web and visiting less familiar sites. This feature is turned on by default for x64 Windows, x64 macOS, x64 Linux, and ARM64 systems, making it an even more secure browser option for users.
The update includes new policies, such as StandaloneHubsSidebarEnabled, which enables the standalone sidebar experience on Windows desktops, and ShowDownloadsToolbarButton, which adds a downloads button to the toolbar. The MicrosoftRootStoreEnabled policy is now obsolete.
The EnhanceSecurityMode policy has been updated, with BasicMode now deprecated. The EdgeWorkspacesEnabled policy has been added, and if the policy isn't configured, users are able to access the Microsoft Edge Workspaces feature.
This update is a controlled feature rollout, so if you don't see the enhanced security mode feature, be sure to check back as the rollout continues.
The Microsoft Edge 114 update introduces two exciting features that will enhance the browsing experience for users, along with policy updates that offer more control and customization options. With Edge Workspaces and the option to attach the Edge sidebar to the Windows desktop, users can enjoy a seamless and productive browsing experience.
Additionally, with enhanced security mode by default, Microsoft Edge continues to be a secure browser option for users.
