Who doesn’t want to be productive? Everyone, right? And this accelerates when you know some most useful keyboard shortcuts. Windows 10 specifies few new keyboard shortcuts along with existing shortcuts which were available for a long time. Using these keyboard shortcuts, you can improve your day-2-day activities.
In this post, I am sharing the Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts along with the descriptions of each key combination. If I missed any, let me know so that, I can update this post for future references.
Don’t forget to bookmark this page as it lists most of the common and important keyboard shortcuts available in Windows 10. I refrained from mentioning shortcuts like Cut, Copy, Paste etc. as those will not give any additional value. Please find below the shortcut key combinations as well as the description of them, listed in a tabular form:

Win | Open/Close the Start menu |
Win + A | Opens the Action Center |
Win + B | Highlights the notification area |
Win + C | Launches Cortana (if available) into listening mode |
Win + D | Minimizes all open windows and shows the desktop, restores them back on next keystroke |
Win + E | Launches the file explorer (This PC) |
Win + H | Opens the Share Panel |
Win + I | Opens the Settings app |
Win + K | Opens the Connect panel to connect to wireless displays and audio devices |
Win + L | Locks the system and shows the Windows lock screen |
Win + M | Minimizes all open windows and shows the desktop |
Win + O | Locks the device orientation |
Win + P | Opens the Project panel to connect with external displays and projectors |
Win + Q | Launches Cortana (if available) into typing mode |
Win + R | Opens the Run dialog box |
Win + S | Launches Cortana (if available) into typing mode |
Win + T | Cycles through the apps available on the taskbar |
Win + U | Launches the Ease of Access Center |
Win + X | Opens the advanced menu from the Start button |
Win + Z | Opens the app specific command bar |
Win + 1, Win + 2, Win + 3 etc. | Launches the nth application available on the taskbar |
Win + ? | Launches the Windows 10 Feedback app |
Win + Enter | Launches the Narrator application |
Win + Space | Switch input language and keyboard layout |
Win + Tab | Opens the Windows 10 Task View |
Win + Comma | Peek view of the desktop |
Win + Plus sign | Zoom in |
Win + Minus sign | Zoom out |
Win + Escape | Closes the magnifier |
Win + Left arrow | Dock the active window to the left half of the screen |
Win + Right arrow | Dock the active window to the right half of the screen |
Win + Up arrow | Maximizes/Restores the active window |
Win + Down arrow | Minimizes the active window |
Win + Shift + Left arrow | Moves the active window to the monitor on the left (Multi monitor support) |
Win + Shift + Right arrow | Moves the active window to the monitor on the right (Multi monitor support) |
Win + Shift + Up arrow | Maximizes/Restores the active window vertically, maintaining the current width |
Win + Shift + Down arrow | Minimizes the active window vertically, maintaining the current width |
Win + Home | Minimizes all non-active windows, restores on second keystroke |
Win + Print screen | Captures a screenshot of the screen and saves in the Pictures -> Screenshots folder |
Win + CTRL + Left/Right arrow | Switches to the previous or next virtual desktop |
Win + CTRL + D | Creates a new virtual desktop |
Win + CTRL + F4 | Closes the current virtual desktop |
CTRL + Shift + 1 | Switches the layout to show Extra Large Icons |
CTRL + Shift + 2 | Switches the layout to show Large Icons |
CTRL + Shift + 3 | Switches the layout to show Medium Icons |
CTRL + Shift + 4 | Switches the layout to show Small Icons |
CTRL + Shift + 5 | Switches the layout to show icons in a List |
CTRL + Shift + 6 | Switches the layout to show icons with Details |
CTRL + Shift + 7 | Switches the layout to show icons in Tiles view |
CTRL + Shift + 8 | Switches the layout to show in Content view |
