You might have already known that, the UK firm named BSkyB raised a complaint against Microsoft infringing the name of their online cloud storage service “SkyDrive” and then a settlement was made providing Microsoft a time to change the brand of their service.
Today, General Manager of Microsoft consumer apps & services Ryan Gavin announced that, they are soon going to rename their popular cloud storage service “SkyDrive” to “OneDrive”.
This official announcement was revealed in a blog post “OneDrive for Everything in Your Life” today by Microsoft General Manager confirming that, they are soon going to roll out the new brand “OneDrive” in replacement of their own cloud storage SkyDrive. The service will continue to operate for all current users of SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro. All the existing contents will be automatically available to OneDrive and OneDrive for business once the new name rolls out.
So, why OneDrive? In the blog post, Microsoft already explained why did they chose this new name in replacement of their popular cloud service SkyDrive. Here is the quote from that post:
“We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life.”
So, very soon you are going to see the new name rolling out on all of your devices like Windows Phone, Surface etc. The new service will be available in this new address: http://onedrive.com. Subscribe to the page to know once the service is available.
