Microsoft claims in a blog announcement that if you are on Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004), the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser consumes 27% less memory by leveraging the Windows segment heap memory.
With this in place, the Win32 applications will now manage memory more efficiently and deliver the best possible browsing experience.
Kim Denny, the Principal PM Manager of the Microsoft Edge team, in her blog post mentioned that the goal of the Microsoft Edge team is to deliver the best performing browser possible on Windows and other platforms. When a browser uses too much memory, it can slow down the whole system.
The latest update for Windows 10 (i.e. Windows 10 May 2020 Update, version 2004) introduces a new "SegmentHeap" value for developers, which is a modern heap implementation that will generally reduce your overall memory usage. When "SegmentHeap" is used as the heap type, it indicates that segment heap will be used and will reduce the memory usage.
As Microsoft Edge has leveraged the Windows segment heap memory improvements, early internal testing results on various devices with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update are showing a memory usage reduction of up to 27% when browsing with Microsoft Edge, Kim Denny wrote in her blog post. She also said that the individual device performance will vary based upon configuration and usage, but the lower memory usage is expected to create a better experience.
